Heartland

I'll see your lawn
and raise you a prairie.
Somewhere between those grasses bending,
swooping like sparrows,
is the place we first came when we came.
So close your owl eyes and call your city Kansas;
not much left here anyway.
So to speak.
Just wild July and the big sky that frightened us.

But such a sky it was.
