Jenny

she makes exclamations, runs
to her room to find the book, the sentence
holds it up smiling and reads
she patches her jeans where
her sharp knees wear through
her fingers touch her cheeks when
she’s happy, when she’s sad
the whole long length of her curls
into a corner of the couch
she won’t look up, just nods
the bell on her bike is our hello
she rides by me, we’ll see each other
at home - she’ll make a drink
i’ll start the onions on the stove
we’ll stand in the kitchen gossiping
arguing, laughing, new old friends
we’ll move away and send
emails of our separate disasters
make playlists and collages
we’ll find our kitchen conversations
don’t travel well, coast to coast
i’ll visit after two years and our hug
will be tight but brief, there are
other friends and the restaurant
is loud, a clatter of voices
the unspoken things between us
