I was in the city today
no one asked me about joy
can you believe that?
glancing from side to side I watched
a hawk settle on a low branch
a dog run away from its master
a child squeal on a swing set
joy is always at hand
ready to be claimed
it rides within us
like a passenger in a taxi
I always forget it
and hop into the getaway car
to obliterate what accumulates
from doing, doing, doing
