January Heartache

I searched the sky

Another year
another January
without you

This time when the ball dropped
and the crowd cheered miles away downtown
it wasn't as empty
as strange and hollow
as it was a year ago
the first New Year's Eve
without you

I searched the sky
it wasn't as grey
as that first New Year's day
without you

The sun broke through
as I drove to the shore
listening to charanga ritmos of yesteryear
on the radio reminding me of you my dear
if only my car could travel as far
as the nearest star
so I could find you
and pay you a Sunday afternoon visit
where we'd cook red beans on a low slow simmer
and listen to salsa y mambo in the livingroom of the eternal

I searched the sky
and there I found you
like I always do
eventually
reminding me
that love never dies
and that the love between a mother and a daughter
only grows and like the music
plays on and on and on
